Remembering Allah through the repetition of formulas (adhkār) is a practice that deeply enriches a person’s life and spiritual well being. While remembrance begins on the tongue it is progressively supposed to move to the mind and then beyond the statement of the formula itself. In such a way a person finds a state of remembrance which means that they are always cognisant of God even when they are not verbalising a formula to remember Him.
But such a state needs upkeep, and so the cycle of remembrance from the tongue to the mind to the state continues to strengthen and flourish through the regular practice of dhikr.
The goal of the process is to always remember Allah as that is the only remedy for hearts that find no peace in anything else. Who see the transient nature of the world and are conscious of their own predicament. Who find pleasure in sensing the metaphysical by developing the senses of the heart and rectifying the vices of the soul.
Which specific formulas should be recited by whom and for what purpose, for how long and with what number is an area of expertise and specialisation. But the concept of constant remembrance is universal. Repeating verses of the Qurʾān in order to reflect on them until they deeply affect you and some of their mysteries are uncovered for you is one of the practices that can be deciphered from the history of Muslim interaction with the Qurʾān as well as narrated worships.
When someone finds the pleasure of the remembrance of Allah, they will seek to always remember Him. The Qurʾān expresses this connection in the most amazing way when God says: “So remember Me; I will remember you…” (2:152) Such an expression is worthy of deep reflection.
May Allah make us of those who always remember Him
