Connection through supplication
The supplications narrated from the Infallibles (as) are one of the clear signs of their excellency and suitability as leaders of the believers. Capturing the very insecurities and concerns deep within the hearts of the spiritually poor, their words can only bring one who uses them as an expression of what is within themselves to tears. The exact balance of hope and fear guides the believer through the range of their own emotions and helps them find a voice with which to ask for their most ardent desires.
Connecting through supplication starts with first connecting to ourselves.
To truly understand our poverty in front of Allah and our severe predicament. By time, surely man is at loss. With no essential perfection to claim for ourselves we are fighting a losing battle. With a short life and limited influence, even the most popular of us are set to be forgotten in time. Only a limited circle has time for you and everyone is self absorbed. Zoom out of our circumstances and humanity itself is insignificant in the tapestry of the cosmos.
Yet our insignificance and poverty become the very treasure with which we can approach the Divine. By the fear induced by our lack, ignorance, sin and open disobedience and the admission of our faults we can find hope in the One who can look over all of that and still give without measure. Guidance, faith, character, humbleness, knowledge, witnessing, salvation, remembrance, understanding, the sustenance of this world and the reward of the next. It is all easy for Him and the key to His Grace is asking from deep down. The expression of which has been left for us by those who know the paths of the sky better than the paths of the earth.
So try to find time to get to know the supplications. Practice reciting them so that they flow easily. Make sure you understand the meaning and do not limit these supplications to the throat alone. Once you truly connect to one supplication in this way, you will connect to them all. If you know or can learn Arabic, that is the key to so much. If you can’t then understand the English well enough so that you can link the languages together for specific supplications. Or if that is also difficult then grasp the translation in your own language and find the meanings deep within your soul.
May Allah open our ways through the supplications of our Infallibles (as) and grant us a place amongst those who call upon Him
